Buxa Fort: Unveiling a Hidden Gem in Nature's Encirclement

Buxa Fort, also known as Buxa Duar, carries within its weathered walls a rich tapestry of history. Serving as a crucial stronghold along the famed silk route connecting India and Tibet through Bhutan, its military significance was unparalleled. Over time, the Buxa Fort became a bone of contention between the Bhutanese king and the Koch Kings, further intensifying its significance.
In 1865, responding to the Koch kings' plea, the British forces captured the fort. This marked a turning point in its history, as the British reconstructed the fort using sturdy stones, replacing the earlier bamboo and wooden structure. With this renovation, the fort transformed into a formidable architecture, a testament to the British Empire's influence in the region.
Buxa Fort also played its role as a high-security prison during the British colonial era. The remote location, shield by dense forests teeming with wildlife, made the fort nearly unnoticeable. It is said that imprisoned revolutionaries once wrote a letter to the revered poet, Rabindranath Tagore, while he resided in Darjeeling. Tagore replied with a letter on June 2, 1939.
